In the past five years, Mr. Harrell has made a name for himself with a smart and sassy project that envisioned a mash-up between 1960s Harlem vogueing and postmodern dance. Now he's embarking on a new journey, beginning a two-year residency at the Museum of Modern Art that he's titled "In one step are a thousand animals." He's a curious artist with a talent for unexpected artistic fusions, and this time he will focus on Tatsumi Hijikata, a pioneer of Butoh, the grisly postwar Japanese performance art. To kick off the creation, Mr. Harrell invites audiences to peek in on his process and welcomes guest artists to discuss it with him.
