This is play by Maggie Nevill will resonate with anyone who has been dumped suddenly, or found out that their boyfriend or girlfriend has been cheating on them. It takes place on New Year's even in the ladies loo of a local pub. Matt (Sean Wildey) has dumped G (Stephanie Butler) and shes furious. Even worse, he owes her fifty quid.
With the help of five mates G kidnaps him form the bar and locks him in a cubicle, which is then secured closed by means of tying all the girls tights round the door. Hes a prisoner, and G means to get her fifty quid by any means possible.
Of course, what she really wants is Matt to apologise, to make everything better, to take her back again. Over the hour and a half we realise that all the girls have reason to distrust, even hate men. Wildeys performance is interesting, because even though he is the villain of the piece, he has some pretty reasonable arguments, and even manages to get most of the girls to admit they have cheated in the past. As he spends almost the entire play invisible inside the toilet cubicle he is to be doubly commended on his performance.
What starts as a fun and frothy romp, turns quite dark in the end, with a terrible betrayal and a possibly fatal accident, and Katy Weirs performance of the final moments as Sal is very moving. The main problem with the piece is that its very static once you have six girls in a ladies loo there is a limit to where you can get them to move. But the performers, all partakers in the very worthy InterACT northern training scheme have their moments.
Quite an interesting and amusing way to spend an hour and a half, and perfect if you have ever been cheated on by a lying, conniving, deceitful, testosterone-fuelled bastard with his brain in his balls .. Sorry, Im over it, really I am.
