Protests have greeted the Metropolitan Opera's staging of John Adams's 1991 opera, a stylized, emotionally resonant reflection on the politics of Israel and the Middle East told through the story of a 1985 cruise-ship hijacking. Though the Met jettisoned the live movie-theater broadcast of this Tom Morris production, opening night will go forward, but there are concerns that the performance will be disrupted. David Robertson conducts, and the excellent cast will include Michaela Martens, Sean Panikkar, Paulo Szot, Alan Opie, Aubrey Allicock and Ryan Speedo Green. The choruses are the score's shining moments, and the Met's great ensemble should rise to the occasion.
