As part of this summer's focus on Schubert and his world, Bard SummerScape presents the rarely staged work by Carl Maria von Weber, a touchstone of German Romantic opera that would greatly influence Wagner. This production by Kevin Newbury tries to make sense of the complex tale of jealousy, betrayal and supernatural forces by placing it in a Victorian context rife with sexual anxieties. The soprano Ellie Dehn sings the title role, and the soprano Wendy Bryn Harmer is her rival, Eglantine. The tenor William Burden, the bass-baritone Ryan Kuster and the bass Peter Volpe round out the cast.
