Dan Nightingale is Trying His Best Not to Be a Dick

After a hilarious pre-show announcement which tells the audience to prepare themselves for an “extravaganza”, Dan Nightingale has set the bar for himself considerably high. Fortunately, he does deliver and what unfolds is an excellent repertoire of laughs aplenty material.

The show is a superb compilation of brilliantly crafted stories written by someone who unquestionably has a keen and instinctive eye for comedy

Dan Nightingale is Trying His Best Not to Be a Dick is essentially just as the title says. The show is made up of comical scenarios which Nightingale finds himself in and focuses predominantly on how he reacts in these situations. Despite his best efforts, sometimes his actions depict him as a dick but the comedic value he brings to the situation balances this out.

Part of Nightingale’s charm and what makes him so engaging is his jovial disposition and slightly cheeky nature. He is also an enthusiastic and animated storyteller; when he is relating an anecdote, you immediately get sucked into the story and follow him all the way, eagerly awaiting that punchline which is undoubtedly coming.

One highlight of the show was when he regaled the time he got thrown out of a McDonald’s which had the audience in hysterics. It was the exemplar funny story, executed impeccably with precise comedic timing proving that he can definitely stand on his own two feet.

Dan Nightingale is Trying His Best Not to Be a Dick is a superb compilation of brilliantly crafted stories written by someone who unquestionably has a keen and instinctive eye for comedy. Nightingale’s buoyant energy makes for an entertaining hour of stand up.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Blurb

International comedian, Lancastrian socialite and circuit legend Dan Nightingale returns to the Fringe for another festival frolic. He may actually be a bit of a dick, but my God he’s funny with it. As seen on Sky 1’s John Bishop's Only Joking. ‘Funny as hell’ (Leicester Mercury). ‘An enthusiastically charming albeit self-deprecating storyteller’ ***** (ThreeWeeks). ‘Witty observations and well-timed delivery’ (Gulf Weekly – Bahrain).
