Firstly, don’t be fooled by the title like I naively was – this is not a lecture on the downfalls of Buddhism nor is it someone trying to sell their faith. Mostly it is just a means to an end of catching your attention and getting you here in the first place so – as you are reading this – it has succeeded.
To be honest, I don’t have much of a clue what the show was really about. So far I have worked out that it’s the story of a man’s extraordinary life, a man addicted to rational thought. Actually it was a pretty miserable life, but despite this, there were plenty of entertaining stories to hold the audience. The production used many adventurous props and techniques, from puppets to tinfoil costumes and from narrating to bursting into song. The three actors were constantly busy, talking to the audience or making fun of each other which meant the audience had little time to get bored.
I would love to tell you more about the show and what you can expect if you go and see it but I really don’t know. One audience member Jess, 17, told me “the play was hilarious but I have no idea what happened” and this really sums it up. Buddhism: Is it just for Losers? will have you laughing from beginning to end. All of the actors are individually very skilled in engaging the audience and have made the absolute most of a quite confusing script. Somehow they made a scene consisting of a fly and a spider talking about faeces sidesplittingly funny. You may leave the theatre having no idea what you just experienced, but you would have thoroughly enjoyed it!
