The Chris Cook Three Minute Interview

At this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Chris Cook presents a tender tale of bittersweet love, combining magic tricks and storytelling to make a funny and touching show that reminds us of some of the tricks we play when we're falling in and out of love. Martin Walker wants to know more.

Well I often perform as part of cabaret nights so getting booked on a bill with burlesque dancers feels a lot like you're getting paid twice...

“My show, Chris Cook: Charlatan, is a stand-up magic show that weaves together magic tricks and comedy to create a bittersweet love story. It's full of mischief and tricks that tie together to tell a tale that hopefully will really resonate with the audience.”

Why did you choose to perform as part of PBH Free Fringe?

“I've wanted to perform at the Fringe for years and always knew I would do it through the PBH Free Fringe. PBH just has a great, supportive ethos rather than some venues and organisations that seem to take their performers for a ride. I've seen some incredible PBH Free shows in the past and I'm honoured to be a part of the team.”

To someone who hasn’t seen you, how would you describe your style of comedy?

“Above all, I try not to take myself too seriously. A big part of my show involves audience interaction and getting people to help me out with tricks on stage, so my comedy always has to be sharp as it can be a different show every night.”

What was your best experience on stage?

“Well I often perform as part of cabaret nights so getting booked on a bill with burlesque dancers feels a lot like you're getting paid twice...”

If you were curating a stand up show for television, who would be your guests?

“I really like alternative comedy so I would probably end up making a fantastic show that no one would watch. I'm a huge fan ofStewart Lee so would love to have him on board, along with acts like Tony Law and the incredible Doug Stanhope. Could I bring Bill Hicks back from the dead as well?”

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this article has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
