BROADWAY BABY REVIEW

Ay, caramba!

Broadway Baby Rating:
Imagine Julio Iglesias, then slap on a skewed, cheap black wig, ill-fitting false teeth and high-waisted trousers pulled so high that his penis is forced to lodge at the side of his leg. Now you have Wilfredo. Wilfredo is both a wonderful and vile creation. A Spanish pop star who ‘laves the ladiees’. He banters with the audience and sings classic pop songs as well as some original ones like ‘The Child Is Not Mine’, a future hit I’m sure. He is accompanied on stage by his guitarist who provides a beautiful accompaniment and a funny rapport with Wilfredo. The show itself is a mixture of Wilfredo’s singing and interaction with the crowd, which he does in a Spanish/Northern British accent, slipping in the odd ‘innit’. But it’s the character of Wilfredo which is the draw of this show. He babbles and dribbles away disgustingly but is also incredibly funny. He is grossly lecherous to all the women and we found out that evening that Welsh women with glasses are his speciality. Nevertheless, he gives out roses to all the women at the end of the show. Wilfredo is utterly grotesque but lovable at the same time.
