A story worth telling

Worst Zoo in Britain

(2008)
Tudur Owen
The Zoo. 1st - 25th August. 17:15 (1h)

Tudur Owen has a story to tell, and he is determined to share it. Owen's epic is one of secrets, deception, mistaken identity and royal mishaps. All of which snowball into a bizarre series of events that resulted in a rather shameful expose on the front page of the News of the World.

Owen takes us on a journey, recalling the numerous calamities which resulted in what can only be described as a major downfall albeit a rather funny one.Take one headstrong father, one shady acquaintance and numerous animals varying in danger and you get the Worst Zoo in Britain. Armed only with a PowerPoint presentation for illustration purposes, Owen provides us with a biopic focussing on a truly unique period of time. Owen offers insight into his native home of Anglessey whilst poking gentle fun at the town.

Whilst the show is not primarily laugh out loud funny it did provoke the odd burst of laughter amongst the audience, with the occassional humourous anecdote getting the desired responses at the right times. Owen makes light of his curious experiences, paying particular attention to an encounter with a member of the royal family and a pair of randy spider monkeys. As a performer Owen is initially a little too overbearing but this quickly subsides allowing Tudur's passion and enthusiam to shine through. Whilst those qualities for this remarkable tale does make for engaging listening, I found that there were times when ones mind did tend to wonder. I felt that the story, though quirky and unique would have worked better had Owen condensed the show down to a shorter duration.

This is not typical stand up and I failed to laugh my socks off though there were some comical moments, I did however leave feeling a little envious of Tudur Owen and his adventures in the worst zoo in Britain. [Sarah Verhaeg]
