Underwhelming physical comedy

The Cubic Man moves into his new home, just larger than a cubic metre. 'M3 - A NoSpace Odyssey' follows the trials and tribulations of his life in this confined abode. The flyer for this show informed me I would "laugh, at first, and feel sorry and sympathetic later". Unfortunately, I was never sufficiently amused to laugh and certainly was not moved enough to feel any sympathy for the show's sole character.

The issue I have here is more the performance and execution, rather than the idea itself. Fernando Sanchez-Cabezado uses 'strange' noises instead of words for speech, has an 'eccentric' dress sense and dons a pair of goggles. This is hardly groundbreaking clowning. The performance moves from underwhelming cliché to plain annoying over the course of its 45 minutes.

M3 is partially redeemed by its well-designed aesthetic, with the use of a simple, sturdy box at the centre-front for the Cubic Man's home. Props and lighting compliment the set well, particularly during the flood and television scenes.

As far as recommending the show, I admit that I can see the appeal for a family audience. The piece's silliness is often reminiscent of Mr Bean, or perhaps one half of the Chuckle Brothers. If, however, it's an interesting work of physical comedy you're after, there's much better to be found elsewhere. [Tom Powell]
