Daniel Cainer plays keyboard and guitar, sings and tells stories about the beginning of Judaism, Jewish migration and his childhood experiences.

The performance opens with a song in which God is having a dialogue with Abraham, who is seen as the father of Judaism. God wants him to make one small sacrifice to demonstrate his faith but Abraham is initially unwilling until God makes him an offer he’s unable to refuse, and so a new faith is started. After this there is a song about the migration of Jews - “lost souls on a journey to God knows where” - from biblical times until the twentieth century.

Daniel Cainer then tells stories about his own ancestors and his childhood, including the break-up of his family following his father’s affair with a non-Jewish woman. He finishes with two songs, “How To Be A Jew”, explaining the rules and regulations of Judaism and “I Am A Jewish Man”.

The show is quite light and gentle and even the serious stories are told humorously. It is reasonable way of spending an hour, particularly for anyone who is Jewish or has Jewish friends.

There are several different acts performing under the banner of Jewish Cabaret and anyone planning to go would be advised to check which act is on that night. [Alan Chorley]
