Based on Fugard's real-life relationship with actor Andre Huguenet.
Exits and Entrances - Athol Fugard (2007)
Richard Jordan, Martin Platt, David Elliot, Primary Stages, Dasha Epstein, Fountain Theatre in association with Assembly
Assembly @ George Street. 3-27 August. 15:20 (1hr30)
The autobiographical play depicts the two encounters between an un-named playwright (William Dennis Hurley) and the distinguished actor, Andre Huguenet, at one time described as the Olivier of South Africa and (Morlan Higgins) whom he admires. It’s 1956 and Andre is producing and starring in Oedipus Rex in Cape Town, for which he has hired the 24-year-old playwright to play the role of a shepherd and act as his dresser. Andre, while vain, bombastic and fragile, considers the theatre his ‘home’ and a place if safety for himself, a young gay man. In 1961
The Playwright meets Andre for the second and last time in Cape Time where Andre is playing in The Prisoner. It is clear to the playwright that Andre’s career, indeed his life has reached the endgame…… As Fugard becomes ever more personal in his writing Exits and Entrances emerges
as an all encompassing self-portrait summing up a magnificent playwriting career and evolution of one of the giants of English language theatre. It movingly examines theatre’s potential to shape lives in enduring ways
