Broadway Baby is the largest reviewer at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. As well as publication on this website and in our own print edition, Broadway Baby reviews are syndicated on iFringe, edfringe.com and by the FMN links exchange, and we accredit all our reviewers with the festival press offices.
We are a founder member of the Festival Media Network, which promotes high standards in the media coverage of festivals.
Broadway Baby reviewers have gone on to successful careers in show business as well as journalism. We have alumni at the BBC, the New York Times, The Scotsman, WhatsOnStage, BroadwayWorld and Impressive PR. Current writers include active theatre designers, directors and producers as well as an abundance of actors and scriptwriters.
We're always looking for volunteer reviewers with:
- practical experience of fringe performance.
- experience in arts journalism.
Successful applicants will have:
- an excellent writing style.
- high levels of personal responsibility.
- critical acumen.
How to Apply
Edinburgh Fringe Team
Applications for this year's Edinburgh Fringe have now closed, however we do have a requirement for one or two classical music specialists who want to help us bring the best coverage to the Fringe.
2013 sees the introduction of a revolutionary new way to manage our review schedules and publication in Edinburgh. Tailored to the unique challenges of covering nearly 3000 shows with over 100 reviewers in just one month, Thistle slashes the time required in the planing stages - matching the right reviewer to a show better than ever - and then ensures review copy isn't lost in the white noise of the festival. Exclusive to Broadway Baby, Thistle improves our ability to offer more comprehensive coverage than ever. "It's like you're on the space programme and we're driving a Robin Reliant"
- Paul Levy, Fringe Review
In 2012 Broadway Baby became the largest reviewing publication at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, overtaking the previous incumbent of that title by nearly a factor of two. To do that we had an amazing team of section editors. In 2013 Editors will be wholly responsible for Broadway Baby's coverage of their area of expertise, scheduling and editing reviews while overseeing their team of writers. As well as gaining excellent writing and editorial experience, our editors receive exclusive discounts, VIP passes, invitations to press events and free tickets to shows.
All section editor roles are now filed.
To apply, please email email@example.com
- A covering letter of no more than 300 words explaining why you're the right person for the position. Remember to include any past fringe/performing experience.
- Three sample reviews (these need not have been published).
- A CV.
This year we are looking for our biggest team of writers yet. The Fringe is an intense time, and as such we will only consider applicants who can commit to at least 25 reviews. We're looking for motivated, capable writers who work well under pressure. In return for your time and dedication, you get a press pass, discounts and benefits. In fact, we have some seriously good privileges exclusively for our reviewers, including standby access at selected venues, deep discounts on our own clothing merchandise and VIP passes.
To apply, please email firstname.lastname@example.org with:
- A 200-word covering letter detailing relevant experience.
- Two sample reviews (these need not have been published).
Brighton Fringe Team
Applications for 2014's Brighton Fringe will be accepted in January 2014.
We're accepting reviewers on a rolling basis. Unlike the madness associated with festivals, London reviewing is a much calmer business. Your commitment need only be as little as one show a month, or one a week if you want to see more. You choose the types of show you want to see, and we'll arrange your tickets to the press night.
Please email your CV and at least two review samples to email@example.com.
Your review samples don't have to have been published, but if your samples are hosted online, please send a link. Ideally, you will submit at least one positive and one negative review and the reviews will have star ratings.
In your covering email, please list the genres you want to write about, and detail the experience that qualifies you to do so.
Note, all positions are unpaid.
